My Tire Replacement Experience

Firestone Tire & Service, San Mateo

Summary: Very sleazy store and manager.

Details: I took a high performance sports car to get my rear tires changed out.

Initially, I just wanted to rotate my rear tires but the salesman claimed it was worn out and dangerous to drive on - more on that later.  Their price was somewhat competitive.  I should have known better when I saw that they only had beaters in their lot.

They claimed that they would take good care of the car.  Instead, they completely damaged the rear rims.  My 2 rims had deep gouges (1-2 mm deep, 6-9" in length) on the whole face of the rim that continue into the center of the rim.  The paint along where the rim and the tires meet were completely shaved off.  You can see that it was very obvious the tire change caused the damage.  They returned the car to me with the wheels very dirty with brake dust to try to cover up the damage.

When I pointed this out to the manager.  The store manager claimed no responsibility and they refused to work on my car further because, and I quote, "we cannot guarantee that we don't damage rims when we replace tires."

My nightmare doesn't end there:

I was very frustrated having $4k worth of rims (my stock rims) damaged by Firestone.  The manager suggested I should write to Corporate if I have a complaint. I did so and through a 2-month process, including an adjuster come out to my car (when the adjuster saw the rims he said that it was obvious the damage was caused by the store), they came back to tell me that the damage was not cause by Firestone because it was my word against the manager's.  In fact, they even refused to let me see the independent adjuster's report because they paid for it so it was their right.  In addition, Corporate claimed no equipment they use could have caused the damaged - completely contrary to what the manager told me and what I saw with my very own eyes.

The store even forged the receipt saying that the damage was already there before they worked on the car to get the credit card payment processed.  Luckily, I had the original, and my nightmare finally ended when I submitted the original receipt to my credit card company.

I had to buy a new set of wheels out-of-pocket and I ended up taking my car down the street to Wheelworks (owned by the same corporate entity) and they did an amazing job.  No scratches whatsoever.  They even returned my car with the wheels cleaned.  In addition, they said my old tires were perfectly fine and I didn't even need new tires to begin with.

I'm sure if my car was a beater I wouldn't have put in this much effort.  If you value your car and you want to avoid a 3-month headache, don't come here.

Wheel Works, San Mateo

Summary: Good service and great work.

Details: After a horrible experience with Firestone up the street I was very hesitant to try out their sister company (owned by the same corporate entity).

Fortunately, they did a great job.  No scratches whatsoever.  They even returned my car with the wheels cleaned.  In addition, they said my old tires were perfectly fine and I didn't even need new tires to begin with.
