You have to be happy where you are

I had a fairly serious discussion with my manager today regarding my professional progression as well as career outlook within the company.  I learned a lot during this experience.  I asked for input from both my close colleague and friends prior to breaching this subject with my manager and they suggested I do not talk about salary or complain about not getting the promotion as promised.

What my manager said to me stuck to me.

He suggested that if I enjoy working where I am, I should do my best and not be worried if I don't get promoted because I have learned a lot during my tenure.  On the other hand, if I have lost my drive, I may need to have a heart-to-heart with myself and possibly consider another opportunity.

I think I know what my answer is.  Not sure what type of sucker I'd need to be to work tirelessly for no reward...
