Because of no one else's fault by my own. I need to be better with my finances. Fortunately, I don't have any debt (beyond a mortgage) and have been able to pay for everything I purchased free and clear. This can't be said for most Americans (regardless of ethnicity and race), which is probably why we experienced such a crazy boom and now such a crazy bust after all these easy credit has been taken away.
Just another reason I spend way too much and need to be good going forward.
