El Coqui in Santa Rosa

When I was visiting a good friend of mine in Santa Rosa, my gf and I had a craving for some Cuban food.  We never had Cuban food before but heard great things on TV about this restaurant in San Rafael.  My friend mentioned that there was also a highly recommended Cuban restaurant in Santa Rosa and took us to El Coqui for lunch.

I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the ethic food in Santa Rosa.  It has been at least 5-years since I lived and worked up there and the place has developed to be more culturally open than I would have expected.  When I lived there in the past, the only food they had was expensive Wine Country restaurants and eateries, or cheap Mexican food.  The quality of their Chinese restaurants was on par with Panda Express.  So imagine my surprise when I highly reviewed Cuban restaurant popped up several years later.

The plantains chips were nice and crunchy and the food itself reminded me of a mix of Mexican and New Orleans cuisine.  The food was extremely flavorful without being spicy.  Very good indeed.
